Nine Ships 1825 Says Thank You to Visitors and Community Members who attended the Peter Robinson Irish Emigration Bicentennial Week.

Now that the official Bicentennial Week of August 1-10 of the Peter Robinson Irish Emigration commemoration has concluded, the Board of Directors of Nine Ships 1825 wants to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made this week so special!

Thank you to our Board of Directors (Brendan Moher, Mary Smith, Maureen Crowley, Dennis Carter-Edwards and Elwood Jones) for taking the initiative to plan this Bicentennial Week and for captaining the ship all the way to its destination. Thank you to our community partners for joining us in commemorating this milestone in the community we share and for supporting this project every step of the way. Thank you to our contractors for contributing their knowledge and expertise to this project. Thank you to our volunteers who stepped up to the plate last week and ensured every event we hosted was an enjoyable one for every participant. Thank you to our donors, whose support was crucial to the success of our Bicentennial Week.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who joined us at our events last week. Residents and visitors from other parts of Canada, the United States and Ireland, came out in full force to celebrate and commemorate their ancestors, their community, and their Irish culture. We know that the 2,024 Irish emigrants who came to our region in 1825, and those descendants who are no longer with us, are looking down with pride. We could not have had the successful Bicentennial Week we had without your kind words of encouragement and keen participation, so thank you.

“It has been an incredible honour for me and a wonderful journey these past couple of years to see the local Irish community pull together to make this Peter Robinson Irish Emigration Bicentennial Project come to life in such an amazing way. Many thanks to our volunteer Board for your remarkable dedication and leadership throughout this historic time for our community. On behalf of the Board of Nine Ships 1825, I want to express our sincere thanks to all the grass root volunteers, financial supporters, suppliers, contractors, community and religious leaders at every level from Peterborough City, County, and the City of Kawartha Lakes for all you have done to make this Bicentennial a brilliant success! Together we have accomplished something truly exceptional by bringing to life the inspiring story of our adventurous, creative, and fun-loving Irish ancestors. They braved the waters of the North Atlantic 200 years ago dreaming of a more promising future for their young families and future generations. Your efforts these past years and months have proven that their incredible legacy lives on in us.” states Brendan Moher, Chair of Nine Ships 1825 Inc.

The week may be over, but we still have lots of photographs and videos from the week that we’d like to share with you! Make sure you’re following Nine Ships 1825 on Facebook and Instagram (and that you’re subscribed to our YouTube channel) so you don’t miss them.
