Peterborough Foundation Funds New Lamp Post Banners in Peterborough

to Highlight the Nine Ships 1825 Bicentennial August 1-10.

The Peterborough Foundation has provided funding for 15 new lamp post banners which hang in downtown Peterborough, highlighting the Nine Ships 1825 Bicentennial August 1-10.

Irish Heritage Month in Canada is March and it has been a very busy month indeed throughout the Peterborough area. Municipal presentations and Irish Flag Raisings took place at local municipalities, the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club hosted a day of music and festivities at the Parish Hall in Douro and it was all topped off with the wonderful 25th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 16th in Peterborough.

What is extra significant this year during Irish Heritage Month is the fact that this is the 200th Anniversary of the Peter Robinson Emigration of 1825. This Bicentennial marks a pivotal moment for our community and the resilience and heritage of 2,024 Irish men, women, and children who made the journey and settled in the area and laid the foundation for a vibrant, diverse community in Peterborough and surrounding area.

Nine Ships 1825 Inc. has been formed to coordinate and promote all the local Irish related heritage/historical and community groups that are planning events during this Bicentennial year and has been named after the nine ships that carried the Irish emigrants across the Atlantic in 1825. The banners on George Street advertise the Bicentennial Events of August 1-10, 2025 and also highlight a banner for each of the nine ships, the Fortitude, Brunswick, Regulus, Resolution, Star and Elizabeth, Albion, Amity and the John Barry.

“The Peterborough Foundation is proud to fund these banners which highlight such a significant part of the history of our community!” states Nancy Martin, Chair of the Peterborough Foundation.

“The Peterborough Historical Society was pleased to submit this partner application for funding on behalf of Nine Ships 1825 because this Bicentennial year is a good opportunity to highlight this important story in the Peterborough area’s history.” states Don Willcock, President of the Peterborough Historical Society.

The history of the Robinson Irish emigrants is intertwined with that of the Indigenous peoples of the region, particularly the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg (Mississauga) First Nations on whose territory the Robinson emigrants came to call home. The Bicentenary of the Robinson emigration invites reflection on these complex histories, honouring the resilience of the early settlers, while respecting truth and reconciliation efforts within our community.
