If you missed the Trent Valley Archives fundraising production of the play, Crossing Over, or you enjoyed the music in it, or you’d like to learn more about the history of the Robinson settler emigrant transport John Barry, you should buy your tickets to Behind the Curtain: Historical and Music Highlights of the Voyage of the John Barry.
The combined history and music presentation takes place on Wednesday, June 11, at 7:30 PM in the Right to Heal PTBO Hall, 441 Rubidge Street, the former S.Andrew’s Church. Enter from the Brock Street Parking lot.
It’s a joint fundraiser for Trent Valley Archives and its community partner, Right to Heal PTBO.
The history component of the presentation focuses on factual details of the voyage, and some of the historical figures on board. It includes a performance of period music. It will be hosted by local historian, researcher, writer, and presenter Don Willcock and multi-instrumentalist folk musician Michael Ketemer, performing traditional 19th-century Irish music.
Don is a long-time docent at Hutchison House Museum as well as a Town Ward resident, president of the Peterborough Historical Society, and on staff at the Peterborough Museum & Archives. Second, they found an article by Don Willcock, Peterborough Museum & Archives staff member and President of the Peterborough Historical Society: “The Adventures of John Keleher: An Irishman, A Sailor, An Immigrant,” published in the Heritage Gazette of the Trent Valley, Volume 14, number 2, August 2009. It can be found online at: https://trentvalleyarchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/2-ISSN-1206-hgtv-August-2009E.pdf

Michael Ketemer is a talented and well-known Peterborough-based musician and musical director. He plays tunes from the lyrical to the lively in various folk traditions, as well as ragtime, classical, and everything in between. He is a multi-instrumentalist on fingerstyle guitar, hammered dulcimer, tin whistle, and concertina. Michael is excited to infuse Irish tunes from the last 200 years into the show. If you’re lucky, you may hear him singing along.
